The Awakening - Personality Developments :: essays research papers
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT The idea that one can understand and comprehend the development of an individual is profound and abstruse, but very few people have actually had success dealing with such a topic. From obstacles such as proper test subjects to the whole stigma of taboo attached in trying to understand the human mind, researchers and psychologists have had success. One of the most notable successes is that of Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychology, as we know it. Freudââ¬â¢s in depth pioneering journey into the minds of people, and how the mind itself develops with the passing of time and events. Other modern psychologists have elaborated on Freud, including the psychologists Erik Erikson and Karen Horney. Their thoughts on the personality development of people relate directly to Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s book, The Awakening. In this book, the theories discussed by Freud and his successors are shown explicitly and implicitly. Obviously, Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s work in the field of personality development was by far the most prolific and controversial. The father of modern psychology, Freud broke all barriers to expose what he thought to be the real reasons for human behavior. His theories of personality development can best start with the discussion of the conscious and the unconscious mind. The conscious mindââ¬âalong with the lesser preconscious mindââ¬âis that part of the mind that one has control, or knowledge of. Ironically, this is the least part of the mind that one has control over. The so called "subconscious" mind is the part of the mind that lurks beneath the surface, filled with instincts, emotions, and unfulfilled desires (Shaffer 26). The total human mind is divided into the famous three parts of the Id, the ego, and the superego. The Id can be correlated directly to the subconscious, since it contains oneââ¬â¢s innermost thoughts, feelings, and desires, or as Freud w ould call them, "wishes". The Id represents oneââ¬â¢s innermost and primitive desires, such as food and reproduction, and it constantly drives oneââ¬â¢s actions. The total antithesis of the Id is the superego. The superego in the case of personality development, comes directly from parents. This superego is consisted of the conscience (punishments and warnings) and the ego ideal (positive rewards and role models). Thus the superego can be defined as what keeps the Id in check, which leads to the ego. The ego is the rationalizing factor, it is the result of the superego and the Id, canceling each other out.

Eng 125 Week 1 Assignment
ENG/125 8/6/2012 A Poem Poetry is not something that I would normally be interested in. Iââ¬â¢ve tried writing poetry only to end up a dismal failure. Iââ¬â¢ve tried to read poetry only to end up bored halfway through. Iââ¬â¢ve always wanted to be one of those soulful poetic types who walk around with a serene look on their faces, snapping their fingers when something tickles their fancy but Iââ¬â¢ve never quite made that transition. Poetry, to me, seems to be a fanciful, ethereal pursuit that has somehow always gone over my head no matter how hard Iââ¬â¢ve tried.Since Iââ¬â¢ve failed miserably at being a poet or even enjoying poetry, you can imagine my surprise when I read ââ¬Å"Dogââ¬â¢s Deathâ⬠and not only enjoyed it but it touched my heart. A good poem knows how to grab not only the readerââ¬â¢s attention but will snag the readerââ¬â¢s emotions and take them on a roller coaster; whether it has a happy or a sad ending the poem should keep the read erââ¬â¢s interest until the end. The poem ââ¬Å"Dogââ¬â¢s Deathâ⬠is a poem about a dog that has become a part of a family only to later be injured and die a slow death from a liver laceration. The author talks of how the dog learned to use the bathroom by going potty on newspapers and then moves on to being potty trained. The author talks of how the family plays with the dog though the dog is hemorrhaging the whole time. The author talks of how they finally saw that there was a problem and rushed the dog to the vet but the dog died on the way and, finally, the author talks of how the dog, in the last hours of her life, has diarrhea in the house but has found a discarded newspaper to go on so as not to soil the floor. The tone that the author uses is a ton of wistfulness and sadness. One might expect the author to use a tone of urgency as they rush the dog to the vet but the poet is remembering the event and the tone has been glazed over with a sadness that downplays the u rgency. The author also uses a poignant metaphor [Definition. (2005-2010)] when he says ââ¬Å"As we teased her with play, blood was filling her skin/and her heart was learning to lie down foreverâ⬠.I can clearly picture the dog trying her hardest to play with the family because she loves them so much but knowing that something is wrong and probably being in a lot of pain at the same time. The faithfulness that the dog shows is heart rending and so very sad but uplifting at the same time. The formalist approach to critiquing literature is the most widely used form [Clugston, R. W. (2010)]. In the formalist approach the reader is asked to look into the piece of literature to see what parts make the piece interesting. The formalist approach asks questions like ââ¬Å"Was there a surprise? â⬠ââ¬Å"How were the characters described? â⬠and ââ¬Å"Why was the plot interesting? â⬠[Clugston, R. W. (2010)]. The formalist approach really gets the reader thinking about w hy they liked the piece, what part was their favorite part and which was their favorite character. The formalist approach can really get to the heart of a piece of literature. In ââ¬Å"Dogââ¬â¢s Deathâ⬠the author uses the main character (we assume the male head of the family) to describe the dogââ¬â¢s beginning as well as the dogââ¬â¢s last moments in life. The characterââ¬â¢s werenââ¬â¢t around for long so they didnââ¬â¢t have a lot of time to develop but we know that the dog was faithful and loving, the man was loving and kind and the rest of the family loved the dog very much. The setting was memorable because you very quickly realize that there is something wrong with the dog so the readerââ¬â¢s interest is quickly snagged and is snagged again at the end when the main character realizes that the dog had one last accident but used a discarded newspaper in order to keep the floor clean. The flow of the poem adds to the appeal because the meter of the poem makes the words roll off of the tongue without tripping over superfluous syllables or complicated words. The idea of the poem is a simple story of a family and their dog and the circumstances surrounding the dogââ¬â¢s demise. If the author had put large words with complicated meanings it would detract from the idea of the poem. A ââ¬Å"Dogââ¬â¢s Deathâ⬠is an emotional poem that is very well written, flows naturally and uses terms, tone and characters that all readers can relate too.The poem, told in the first person, is thought provoking, interesting, has highs and lows and leaves the reader really feeling the meaning of the poem; and that is what a poem is meant for. Hamlet: The Tragic Hero Essay
Hamletââ¬â¢s flaw is that he has a hard time carrying out his plans; he does not have the raw passion that enraged Laertes (). Hamlet took time to think about his actions and the consequences for his plans, many times did he think of doing them, yet he did not carry out them out. Hamlet was not a forgetful, evil character, but more of a tragic hero. The beginning of the play sets out the story and the Ghost of Hamletââ¬â¢s late father reveals the truth about his murder to his son. He tells Hamlet to avenge his death. Hamletââ¬â¢s response seems like he has quick plans to carry out his fathers wishing, by saying ââ¬Å"Haste me to knowââ¬â¢t that I with winds as swiftâ⬠¦ May sweep to my revenge.â⬠(I v 33-5) Unfortunately, Hamletââ¬â¢s inability to act on his fatherââ¬â¢s extortion has him reluctant to kill the King Claudius by the end of that very scene, when he says, ââ¬Å"This time is out of joint, O cursed spite ââ¬â that I was ever born to set it right.â⬠(I v 206-7) Here, Hamlet is already having doubts and wishing that he wasnââ¬â¢t the one that had to carry out the revenge for his father. Obviously Hamlet has real problems when it comes down to dealing with things. As the play goes on, Hamlet still has not done a thing to avenge his father. In Act II, Scene 2, Hamlet decides that before he can avenge his fatherââ¬â¢s death, he must make sure that the Ghost was telling the truth. This simply gives Hamlet more excuse to procrastinate. Hamlets play is a parody of the way Claudius killed the previous king and took his wife. When the play is seen by Claudius, Claudius becomes outraged and ends the play. Hamlet knows now that Claudius is guilty. He justifies this inaction by saying ââ¬Å"The spirit I have seen ââ¬â May be the devilâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He is very firm in his believe of faith and he does not want to be pulled into Hell because of a filthy deed given to him by a demon. However, because of Claudiusââ¬â¢ reaction, Hamlet knews the ghost was true. He comments to Horatio, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take the ghostââ¬â¢s word for a thousand pound.â⬠In act III, scene 3, Hamlet is ready to kill the king, but stops himself because the king is praying. Again Hamletââ¬â¢s faith stops him from the horrid act of regicide. Because the king is praying that if he killed him now theà king would go to heaven. He decides yet again to delay avenging his fatherââ¬â¢s murder, this time until he can kill the King while he is in a vile condition, such as ââ¬Å"When he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed.â⬠(III iii 92-3) In the end of the play, we see that Hamletââ¬â¢s inability to act causes his tragic demise. Hamlets failure to revenge his father when he should have, costs him not only his life, but also his motherââ¬â¢s. In the final scene, Hamlet duels with Laertes, who has conspired with the King to kill Hamlet. In the Kingââ¬â¢s attempt to kill Hamlet, he accidentally poisons the Queen. Laertes delivers the fatal wound to Hamlet with a sword dipped in a deadly poison and it is only with his final life breath that Hamlet finally kills the King. So, Hamlet has finally killed the king, but not by going out and slaying the king while he was involved in ââ¬Å"incestuous sheetsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"drunk asleepâ⬠like he said, but with a poison the king made himself to kill Hamlet. Ultimately, Hamlet avenged his father, and his fatherââ¬â¢s later wish for the queen to be left to die without Hamlet killing her. However it came at a very heavy cost; Hamlet, Laertes, and Gertrudeââ¬â¢s deaths, and Denmark falling into the hands of the Norwegian enemy, Fortinbras.

Balanced Scorecard Essay
A balanced scorecard is very helpful to any organization and should be viewed as a very important document throughout the company. Wal-Mart has developed a scorecard so that their customers can see what goals that the company wants to achieve and also how to achieve those goals. If you look at the scorecard on a regular basis, then you will know exactly how your company is running and what areas you need to work on. Wal-Mart wants everyone to know where to look at their scorecard and how to achieve the goals that they feel will make them even more successful. Wal-Mart also expects that every employee should follow this scorecard to guarantee they are doing the right things to make the company grow even faster and stronger than they already are (Balanced Scorecard Basics, 2014). The financial part is a very important part to Wal-Mart. With this part being successful you will be able to pay all the employees the right amount and also pay all the bills so that the company can make more money and keep thriving in the world today. Also with the financials down, the shareholders will see an increase in the amount of what the shares are selling for and that lets them know what they are making for owning those shares in the company. A competitive position is a major key within a huge retail chain like Wal-Mart. They are number one compared to other store chains similar to them. They continue building stores all over the world while a lot of the competitors keep shutting their stores down. Staying atop of this list is what makes Wal-Mart the leader in general merchandising stores (Wal-Mart Stores, 2013). Another major area of a balanced scorecard is how the customers see what Wal-Mart is doing. This is the most important part other than theà financials but work hand in hand with the financials. If the customers see Wal-Mart as a bad company then they will not buy the items that Wal-Mart is selling and then Wal-Mart will not be able to afford their bills and payroll and eventually have to close down. If they see Wal-Mart as a great place to shop then they will tell everyone that they know to shop there and that will make the revenue rise and make more profit for the company so that they can become even more successful in the future. The customers perspective always pays a big role in any company, if you keep them happy, then the will spend more money and time and energy with your company instead of your competitors (Balanced Scorecard Basics, 2014). Innovation is what you need to do to improve the company and learn how to grow and become a stronger economy. Wal-Mart is trying to be innovative in how they get their ads out to the general public. They are starting to email adds out to individuals emails letting their customers know of great deals and opportunities that are coming up in the local stores (Balanced Scorecard Basics, 2014). They are also developing an app for the smart phones of today with the deals and specials going on within the company. They are trying to get their products and service out in the community. Last but not least are the internal methods. They look at areas they think they will excel in and also the areas that will not excel so much at. The areas that Wal-Mart plans to excel at are usually the electronics. They look at other ideas to help them excel even more than usually and develop a plan to implement how to excel further in these areas. The Ares that are weak, they look for reasons that they are weak and how can they implement a plan to make those areas excel in also. When they can get all the areas in the store to excel greatly then they will become very successful and continue to grow beyond measure. This paper has demonstrated how a strategic plan of a balanced scorecard can help any company grow to a different standard. With these scorecard in effect and followed out completely then any company will succeed in everything that they want to do and become very successful. References Wal-Mart Stores. (2013, November 6). Conscientious Objection in an all Volunteer Force Essay
Conscientious Objection in an all Volunteer Force - Essay Example Religious values and beliefs are the imperative reasons that caused the army personnel to fight ââ¬Å"war against warâ⬠or other military related activities. During World War I and II, the concern of conscientious objectors, became more acute. Many young conscripts often believe that it is immoral and unethical to carry arms and ammunition with them as it is contrary to their religious values. As a result, many young men refuse army services and decide to undertake other civilian services. Sometimes, army personnel who are already working for military services become conscientious objectors when their mind and beliefs make a paradigm shift. In many countries, there is no official permission from military services departments for military personnel to renounce their participation in war times, option to resign this post and work for civilian services. Under these situations, conscientious objectors often confront with punishments, imprisonment, discrimination, prosecution etc. I n essence, a decision to compel an individual to engage in armed combats and serve the military, hampers the integrity and dignity of human beings. However, certain human rights association realized the sensitivity of conscientious objection issue and created relevant legislations to deal with such issue. The next paragraph focuses on few legislative actions which consider the sensitivity of the issue. Military Selective Service Act states comprehensive descriptions regarding the issue of Conscientious Objection. According to the Section 6 of Military Selective Service Act, if a person is not willing to pursue his career in military service due to political, philosophical, religious or social code, he can pursue noncombatant services. He can perform civilian work by maintaining the safety, health or interest. Council of Europe (1967) had passed a resolution that defended those individuals who refused to serve the military for other honest reasons. (Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe No 337, 1967) Discussion Many authors and practitioners believe that military personnel present opposing views and behaviors to military services not only on the basis of religion, but due to other moral values as well. The study of Milenkovic (2003) states that besides having the religious reasons, more often citizens refuse to work for army services because of political, philosophical, moral, and ethical concerns as well. Current Situation After the Second World War, Roman Catholic countries and traditions especially, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria and Portugal legally recognized conscientious objection. On the other hand, countries belonging to communism regimes did not permit the legalization of this act. After the plunge of communism, many European Countries now recognize these acts by allowing conscientious objection and further spread it to other continents and countries. End State Goals In some authorsââ¬â¢ point of view, there should be no permission o f the idea of conscientious objection due to numbers of reasons. Every nation aims to consolidate the number of army personnel of their country as it is very constructive and crucial for the security and sovereignty of the whole nation. The larger the number of military personnel, the safer will be the sovereignty of the nation as a whole. Possible Alternate Outcomes for the Current Situation The current situation allows conscientious obj
